“Madrid Road”

30” x 40”

Driving back to Jemez from Madrid, I came upon these jagged slivers of rock right on the roadside. I had never noticed them before. They were interwoven with very animated wild looking junipers.

Both the stone and junipers looked as if they were trying their best to escape the earth’s grip on them. That's how I saw it, and tried to capture all that energy with the paint. The cube-like stones I used to express the earth’s unwillingness to relinquish its power using the hard late afternoon’s light on them. The sky is soft but changing into perhaps a coming storm, and gives the eye a resting place from the earth’s drama, while the whole painting is in constant movement.
