“Obsidian Pool”

44” x 60”

This Jemez Mountain spring fed pool is called McCauly Spring. The Jemez mountains’ last addition was the volcano's eruption a million years ago. Scott Momaday calls the Jemez, “The Island In The Sky”. And, PBS made it a documentary film. I love the clarity of the springs water and the big black obsidian boulders encircling it. I spent a year on this one, glazing and painting layer upon layer to get the liquidity of the water and the endless reflections playing on the surface. I stop for now, but probably could paint another year on it and still enjoy myself, but then it would  be a different painting.
